What's the manufacturing process of honed steel tubes
Jul 01, 2025
The manufacturing process of honed steel tubes typically involves the following steps:
Raw material selection: High-quality steel billets are chosen as the raw material. The chemical composition and mechanical properties of the steel are carefully inspected to ensure they meet the required standards.
Tube forming: The steel billet is heated and then formed into a tube-like shape through processes such as extrusion or drawing. This initial tube has a rough surface and may not have the exact dimensions and properties needed.
Honing: The key process is honing. The inner surface of the tube is processed with a honing tool. The honing tool rotates and moves axially inside the tube, removing a small amount of material from the inner wall to improve its dimensional accuracy, surface roughness, and straightness. This process can achieve very high precision, with the surface roughness of the inner wall usually reaching Ra0.2 - Ra1.6 μm.
Finishing treatments: After honing, the tubes may undergo further finishing treatments such as polishing, coating, or heat treatment. Polishing can further improve the surface finish, coating can enhance corrosion resistance, and heat treatment can adjust the mechanical properties of the steel to meet specific application requirements.
Quality inspection: Finally, strict quality inspections are carried out. This includes checking the dimensional accuracy, surface quality, mechanical properties, and straightness of the tubes. Any tubes that do not meet the quality standards are rejected or reworked.
