How Does The Cold Drawing Process Achieve A Zero-defect Surface?
Apr 21, 2025
1. Raw materials and pretreatment
The cold drawing process has extremely high requirements for raw materials. High-purity carbon steel, alloy steel or stainless steel must be selected, and their chemical composition, hardness, and surface defects must be strictly tested. The raw materials must be pretreated by pickling, phosphorus saponification, etc., to remove oxide scale and impurities, and lubricants must be applied to reduce friction damage during the cold drawing process. For example, in the production of 316L stainless steel special-shaped tubes, pickling can significantly improve the surface cleanliness and lay the foundation for subsequent processing.
2. Mold design and process control
The precision of the mold directly affects the surface quality. When using carbide or diamond molds, the mold hole size must be reduced step by step, and the cross-sectional area reduction rate of each pass is usually less than 30% to avoid cracks or wrinkles due to excessive deformation. During the cold drawing process, the tension, speed, and temperature must be precisely controlled to ensure that the material is evenly stressed and there is no local stress concentration.
3. Lubrication and annealing process
High-efficiency lubricants can reduce direct friction between molds and materials and prevent surface scratches. Annealing treatment is required after cold drawing to eliminate the internal stress caused by work hardening, while refining the grain structure and avoiding the expansion of surface microcracks.
4. Surface finishing and quality inspection
The cold-drawn products need to be straightened, mechanically polished or polished to remove residual burrs and tiny bumps. Optical inspection, ultrasonic flaw detection, and other means are used to conduct a full inspection of surface finish and dimensional tolerance to ensure compliance with standards such as GB3639-2000. For example, cold-drawn seamless steel pipes need to be verified by tensile tests and bending tests to verify mechanical properties and surface integrity.
Wuxi Shenlu Hydraulic Parts Co., Ltd. can effectively achieve a zero-defect surface by integrating high-precision molds, multi-pass cold drawing processes, and full-process quality monitoring. The core lies in the full-link coordination of materials-processes-testing to ensure the high reliability of products in aerospace, precision instruments, and other fields.
