How to improve the surface hardness of high-precision honed steel tubes

Oct 27, 2024

Alloy steel materials: When manufacturing high-precision honed steel tubes, the selection of steel containing alloy elements is the basis for improving the surface hardness. When the chromium content in the steel reaches 1% - 2%, the molybdenum content is 0.2% - 0.5%, and the vanadium content is about 0.1% - 0.2%, after proper heat treatment and honing, the surface hardness of the high-precision honed steel tube will be significantly improved.
Special steel: For some application scenarios with extremely high hardness requirements, tool steel or die steel can be considered to manufacture high-precision honed steel tubes. These steels themselves have high hardness and wear resistance, and can meet the requirements of high precision and high hardness after honing.
Optimize heat treatment process
Quenching process: Quenching is a key heat treatment step to improve the hardness of high-precision honed steel tubes. During the quenching process, the heating rate, quenching temperature and quenching medium must be accurately controlled. For high-precision honed steel pipes, rapid heating can refine austenite grains and increase hardness. The choice of quenching temperature should be determined according to the composition of the steel, generally between 800-950°C. For example, for high-precision honed steel pipes made of medium carbon steel, oil quenching after heating at 850°C can obtain better hardness and smaller deformation.
Tempering process: Tempering can eliminate quenching stress, stabilize the organization, and to a certain extent improve the toughness of high-precision honed steel pipes.
Use superhard abrasives: In the process of honing high-precision honed steel pipes, choosing appropriate abrasives can affect the hardness of the steel pipe surface.
Control honing parameters: The parameters of high-precision honed steel pipes during honing will also affect the surface hardness of the steel pipe. Properly increasing the rotation speed and reciprocating speed of the honing head can increase the cutting effect of the abrasive on the steel pipe surface and produce more cold work hardening effects.
Chemical heat treatment: Chemical heat treatment is one of the effective methods to improve the surface hardness of high-precision honed steel tubes.
Surface coating technology: Using surface coating technologies such as physical vapor deposition or chemical vapor deposition, a layer of extremely high hardness coating can be deposited on the surface of high-precision honed steel tubes.
