How to determine whether the thickness of a hard chrome plated rod is uniform
Dec 13, 2024
Cross-section sampling of the hard chrome plated rod is performed, and the cross-section of the hard chrome plated rod of the sample is ground using a grinding device, from coarse grinding to fine grinding, gradually reducing the roughness of the grinding particles to make the cross-section surface flat and smooth. After that, polishing treatment is performed, usually using materials such as diamond polishing agent to further improve the surface quality. The treated hard chrome plated rod sample is placed under a metallographic microscope for observation. By adjusting the focal length and magnification of the microscope, the boundary between the chrome layer and the substrate, as well as the distribution of the chrome layer of the hard chrome plated rod on the cross section can be clearly seen. Observe whether the thickness of the chrome layer is consistent in different positions (such as the circumferential direction and the axial direction). If the thickness difference is obvious, it means that the chrome layer is uneven.
Cross-section sampling of the hard chrome plated rod is also required, but the scanning electron microscope has higher requirements for the sample, requiring better conductivity and surface flatness. Therefore, conductive treatment such as gold spraying may also be required during the sample preparation process. The sample is placed in a scanning electron microscope, and a high-resolution image of the cross section of the chrome layer can be obtained by scanning the sample surface with an electron beam. This image can provide more detailed microstructural information, including the crystal structure, porosity and thickness distribution of the chrome layer. Using image analysis software, the thickness of the chrome layer at different locations can be accurately measured and its uniformity can be accurately evaluated. The magnetic thickness gauge measures the thickness of the chrome layer based on the magnetic principle. When the substrate is a magnetic material, the probe of the magnetic thickness gauge is placed vertically on the surface of the hard chrome plated rod.
The instrument determines the thickness of the chrome layer by measuring the change in magnetic flux between the probe and the substrate. Measure at different locations on the surface of the hard chrome plated rod and record the thickness data at each location.
If the data difference at different locations is small and within the allowable error range of the instrument, it means that the thickness of the chrome layer is relatively uniform; otherwise, it indicates that the thickness is uneven. The advantage of this method is non-destructive testing and relatively fast speed, but for thin chrome layers or hard chrome plates with complex shapes, the measurement accuracy may be limited to a certain extent.
For hard chrome plates with non-magnetic substrates, eddy current thickness gauges can be used. When the probe is close to the surface of the hard chrome plated rod, the instrument will generate an alternating magnetic field to form eddy currents in the chrome layer and the substrate. Due to the different characteristics of the chrome-plated layer and the substrate, the thickness of the chrome-plated layer is determined by detecting the change of eddy current. Similarly, measurements are taken at multiple locations of the hard chrome-plated rod, and the data are compared to determine the thickness uniformity of the chrome-plated layer. This method is also a non-destructive test, and the surface state requirements of the chrome-plated layer are relatively low, but the measurement accuracy will also be affected by factors such as the conductivity of the chrome-plated layer and the characteristics of the substrate material.
Select a suitable chemical reagent that can selectively dissolve the chrome-plated layer without affecting the substrate material.
Immerse a small part of the hard chrome-plated rod in the chemical reagent and carry out the dissolution reaction under certain temperature and time conditions. By accurately controlling the reaction time and the concentration of the chemical reagent, the chrome-plated layer can be gradually dissolved. During the dissolution process, take out the hard chrome-plated rod at regular intervals, rinse it with clean water, and use a micrometer or other measuring tool to measure the remaining thickness of the chrome-plated layer. This method can directly measure the thickness change of the chrome-plated layer at different time points, thereby evaluating its thickness uniformity. However, this method is destructive and will cause certain damage to the hard chrome-plated rod, so it is generally only used for small samples or sampling inspection of hard chrome-plated rods.
